2010 Cashion helps USC B Win! USC B wins Start to Finish Classic hosted by Webber College at Lake Wales Golf Club, freshman Travis Cashion help team win with scores of 73,77, and 76 Jackson Finishes 3rd and 1st at HJGT! Sam Jackson wins Kiawah Island Junior Challenge at Cougar Point by a shot over Lushes Evans of Pinewood Prep. “#9, a par 5 I hit a good tee shot, and a good second shot, then a wedge to 15 feet and made it for birdie.” “The wind made trajectory and distance tough to control” 38, 74 was Sam’s winning score with a weather shortened first round. “I was nervous but I welcomed the feeling” On #16 Lushen had a 1 shot lead and hit the par 5 in 2 but I had a downhill lie that I had to lay up. I had 42 yards and made par from there. Lushen 3 putted for par so he took a one shot lead into 17. I made par but lushen 4 putted the green for a double so I took a 1 shot lead to #18. I hit a good second shot to 15 feet and made a par and Lushen left his birdie putt short of the hole. Two weeks before I finished 3rd in Jacksonville at the HJGT Winter Championship and won this week. My routines, putting, full swing, pitching, was really good and help me feel really good over the ball. Also did not race ahead with my thinking. I stayed right in the present, “I tried to apply all of Dr. Mo ideas on thinking during the tournament.” 2009 2009 Girls High School Golf State Championships Class 4-A State Championship Congratulations to Maureen Dunnagan for winning the Individual State Championship and leading the Lexington Wildcats to there 6th Straight State Championship. 7/25/07 Michael Day Earns 3rd Place Trophy at the Thornblade Club
Twelve year old Michael Day, a student in the GBGA Senior Class had a memorable outing at this year's Blade Junior Golf Classic at the Thornblade Club in Greer. The Blade is an invitation only tournament, hosted by PGA/Senior PGA player Jay Haas. The Thornblade Club is a premier golf course and country club - home course to Jay Haas, Bill Haas, Lucas Glover, Charles Warren, Kyle Thompson, and Dottie Pepper, among others. Jay Haas presents a clinic for the participants and parents and then hosts a dinner for them the night before the tournament.
After a hard lesson in putting on bentgrass in the first round, Michael finished the day in 17th place. That evening he worked on his putting on the Thornblade's practice green. The next day he shot the lowest round of the tournament to move up 14 slots to take home the 3rd place trophy. Michael shot a 43-36 for a 79 total.
Congratulations Michael!
05/24/07 George Bryan IV Named AgSouth Homegrown Athlete of the Week USC Gamecock and GBGA Alum George Bryan IV has been selected as AgSouth's Homegrown Athlete of the Week for his excellent performance in last week's NCAA West Regional, where he set a school record for lowest individual score in NCAA tournament action and the fourth lowest individual three round score in any Gamecock team event. In that event, George was the only Gamecock still on the course on the tournament's last day, when Coach Bill McDonald told him he would likely need to birdie his final 3 holes for the Gamecocks to win the tourney. George finished out par, eagle, birdie and the Gamecocks won by 2 strokes! Congratulations, George!
5/24/07 Colin Witiak wins SC Junior Amateur Qualifier Congratulations to GBGA Student Colin Witiak who won the Wedgefield SC Jr. Am Qualifier last weekend. Colin shot a 74 in his effort. Several qualifying tournaments are being held around the state to determine who will play in the SC Jr. Amateur. These qualifiers attract South Carolina's best juniors, and winning one is a notable accomplishment. Several other GBGA students also qualified to play in the SC Jr. Am next month. Travis Cashion qualified at the Wedgefield Qualifier with a 78. Ben Miller qualified at the Sweetwater Qualifier. Ben shot a 79. Grant Bauknight qualified at Wyboo Plantation Qualifier, shooting a 78. Congratulations to you all! The Hickory Knob Qualifier has been rescheduled to June 1st.
05/21/07 USC Gamecocks Win NCAA West Regional! When we kicked off our coverage of USC's season this spring, we ended our first article with the following: "The Gamecocks this year are a young team that is building for the future. The team has no Seniors and only 3 Juniors. Eight of the twelve players are from right here in South Carolina." Well, the future might have arrived this weekend! The Gamecocks improved fairly steadily during the season and put in a number of top ten finishes in the 2nd half of the season. Still, something seemed to be missing, and they were not quite reaching their potential. One of the areas that Coach McDonald thought needed improvement was the teams overall short game. So some time ago, the team started to put extra effort into sharpening their short game skills. It seems to be paying off! The Gamecocks were seeded 11th in the tourney and a large number of top teams are in the West Regional. The Gamecocks set a school record 273 on the first day of the tournament for lowest score in NCAA Tournament play and then broke that record the very next day with a 269 to be one stroke out of the lead going into the final round. This occured because several gamecocks had career topping performances in this tournament. On Saturday the team finished with a 278 to win the tourney by 2, beating 9 teams in the nations top 25 in the process. GBGA Alum George Bryan IV made an important contribution to the win. His 204 was the lowest NCAA Tournament score in school history. George was the last Gamecock on the course on Saturday and finished his round eagle, birdie to help cement the win. This fine performance helped George rise to be ranked 80th in the country. It was very much a team effort though. Every single Gamecock finished the week under par! The Gamecocks now go to Williamsburg, VA to play in the NCAA Finals May 31st - June 3. Congratulations to GB4 and all the Gamecocks!
05/19/07 GBGA Students Snag Trophies at the SCJGA Par 3 Challenge Winners in the 8-12yr Division Caleb & Michael are on the far right. | | | |
The SCJGA held their ninth annual Par 3 Challenge at both Lake Murray Golf Center and the Golf Center on Saturday, May 19th. This is a two person captain's choice tournament played over 18 holes. Teams come from all parts of South Carolina to participate. Libby Crawford and her dad Cam claimed the 3rd place trophy with a one under par 53 in the 8yrs & up division. In the 8-12 year old division, nine year old Caleb Proveaux and twelve year old Michael Day teamed up to shoot a three under par 51 to capture the 3rd place trophy. Congratulations Libby & Cam and Caleb and Michael!

Even more amazing - it was his second hole in one on that hole, and his second hole in one in the last six months Congratulations to Ben!
4/9/07 GBGA Alum John Gault Captures 2nd Place at Wofford Invitational Congratulations to GBGA Alum John Gault, who fired an excellent 68-71-71=210 (-6) to lead Wofford to a 4th place finish and capture 2nd as an individual in the Wofford Invitational. That was a career best finish for John, who is still improving his game at the college level. Congratulations, John!
4/08/07 Gamecocks Finding Their Form in Spring Season The USC Gamecocks have been showing excellent improvement this spring. After finishes of 17th, 7th, 16th, 14th, and 12th, this young and talented team is rounding into good form. And this with their strength of schedule rated at number 10 in the nation. Their last three finishes were 4th, 9th, and 4th. This series of tourneys started at the Schenkel E-Z Go Invitational in Statesboro, GA. There the Gamecocks delivered their first top 5 finish of the year. Both Baker Elmore and Allen Koon turned in career best performances in the effort. |
