Cashion helps USC B Win!

USC B wins Start to Finish Classic hosted by Webber College at Lake Wales Golf Club, freshman Travis Cashion help team win with scores of 73,77, and 76

Jackson Finishes 3rd and 1st at HJGT!

Sam Jackson wins Kiawah Island Junior Challenge at Cougar Point by a shot over Lushes Evans of Pinewood Prep.

“#9, a par 5 I hit a good tee shot, and a good second shot, then a wedge to 15 feet and made it for birdie.”

“The wind made trajectory and distance tough to control”

38, 74 was Sam’s winning score with a weather shortened first round.

“I was nervous but I welcomed the feeling”

On #16 Lushen had a 1 shot lead and hit the par 5 in 2 but I had a downhill lie that I had to lay up.  I had 42 yards and made par from there.  Lushen 3 putted for par so he took a one shot lead into 17.

I made par but lushen 4 putted the green for a double so I took a 1 shot lead to #18.  I hit a good second shot to 15 feet and made a par and Lushen left his birdie putt short of the hole.

Two weeks before I finished 3rd in Jacksonville at the HJGT Winter Championship and won this week.

My routines, putting, full swing, pitching, was really good and help me feel really good over the ball.  Also did not race ahead with my thinking.  I stayed right in the present, “I tried to apply all of Dr. Mo ideas on thinking during the tournament.”

Miranda is a teammate of Maureen's on the 5-time State Champion Lexington Wildcats team and after the dust settled, the rising senior had won her first major individual championship!

“The match with Danielle was mentally tough because we are so close. I’m just really glad to play well at the right time,” said Dunnagan.

Michael Day Earns 3rd Place Trophy at the Thornblade Club

Twelve year old Michael Day, a student in the GBGA Senior Class had a memorable outing at this year's Blade Junior Golf Classic at the Thornblade Club in Greer.

The Blade is an invitation only tournament, hosted by PGA/Senior PGA player Jay Haas.  The Thornblade Club is a premier golf course and country club - home course to Jay Haas, Bill Haas, Lucas Glover, Charles Warren, Kyle Thompson, and Dottie Pepper, among others.

Jay Haas presents a clinic for the participants and parents and then hosts a dinner for them the night before the tournament.

After a hard lesson in putting on bentgrass in the first round, Michael finished the day in 17th place.  That evening he worked on his putting on the Thornblade's practice green.  The next day he shot the lowest round of the tournament to move up 14 slots to take home the 3rd place trophy.  Michael shot a 43-36 for a 79 total.

Congratulations Michael!

George Bryan IV Named AgSouth Homegrown Athlete of the Week

USC Gamecock  and GBGA Alum George Bryan IV has been selected as AgSouth's Homegrown Athlete of the Week for his excellent performance in last week's NCAA West Regional, where he set a school record for lowest individual score in NCAA tournament action and the fourth lowest individual three round score in any Gamecock team event.

In that event, George was the only Gamecock still on the course on the tournament's last day, when Coach Bill McDonald told him he would likely need to birdie his final 3 holes for the Gamecocks to win the tourney.  George finished out par, eagle, birdie and the Gamecocks won by 2 strokes!

Congratulations, George!

Colin Witiak wins SC Junior Amateur Qualifier

Congratulations to GBGA Student Colin Witiak who won the Wedgefield SC Jr. Am Qualifier last weekend.  Colin shot a 74 in his effort.  Several qualifying tournaments are being held around the state to determine who will play in the SC Jr. Amateur.  These qualifiers attract South Carolina's best juniors, and winning one is a notable accomplishment.

Several other GBGA students also qualified to play in the SC Jr. Am next month.

Travis Cashion qualified at the Wedgefield Qualifier with a 78.

Ben Miller qualified at the Sweetwater Qualifier.  Ben shot a 79.

Grant Bauknight qualified at Wyboo Plantation Qualifier, shooting a  78.

Congratulations to you all!

The Hickory Knob Qualifier has been rescheduled to June 1st.

USC Gamecocks Win NCAA West Regional!

Congratulations to the USC Gamecocks, who not only finished high enough to advance to the NCAA Finals, they won the NCAA West Regional!

When we kicked off our coverage of USC's season this spring, we ended our first article with the following:

"The Gamecocks this year are a young team that is building for the future.  The team has no Seniors and only 3 Juniors.  Eight of the twelve players are from right here in South Carolina."

Well, the future might have arrived this weekend!

The Gamecocks improved fairly steadily during the season and put in a number of top ten finishes in the 2nd half of the season.  Still, something seemed to be missing, and they were not quite reaching their potential.  One of the areas that Coach McDonald thought needed improvement was the teams overall short game.  So some time ago, the team started to put extra effort into sharpening their short game skills.  It seems to be paying off!

The Gamecocks were seeded 11th in the tourney and a large number of top teams are in the West Regional.

The Gamecocks set a school record  273 on the first day of the tournament for lowest score in NCAA Tournament play and then broke that record the very next day with a 269 to be one stroke out of the lead going into the final round.  This occured because several gamecocks had career topping performances in this tournament.  On Saturday the team finished with a 278 to win the tourney by 2, beating 9 teams in the nations top 25 in the process.

GBGA Alum George Bryan IV made an important contribution to the win.  His 204 was the lowest NCAA Tournament score in school history.  George was the last Gamecock on the course on Saturday and finished his round eagle, birdie to help cement the win.  This fine performance helped George rise to be ranked 80th in the country.

It was very much a team effort though.  Every single Gamecock finished the week under par!

The Gamecocks now go to Williamsburg, VA to play in the NCAA Finals May 31st - June 3.

Congratulations to GB4 and all the Gamecocks!

Libby Crawford and her dad Cam claimed the 3rd place trophy with a one under par 53 in the 8yrs & up division.

In the 8-12 year old division, nine year old Caleb Proveaux and twelve year old Michael Day teamed up to shoot a three under par 51 to capture the 3rd place trophy.

Congratulations Libby & Cam and Caleb and Michael!

Gamecocks Finding Their Form in Spring Season

The USC Gamecocks have been showing excellent improvement this spring.

After finishes of 17th, 7th, 16th, 14th, and 12th, this young and talented team is rounding into good form.  And this with their strength of schedule rated at number 10 in the nation. Their last three finishes were 4th, 9th, and 4th.

This series of tourneys started at the Schenkel E-Z Go Invitational in Statesboro, GA.  There the Gamecocks delivered their first top 5 finish of the year.  Both Baker Elmore and Allen Koon turned in career best performances in the effort.

.

Next, the Gamecocks went to the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate where they also played well.  They were the highest finishing team from the SEC Conference, at 9th.

Academy alum George Bryan IV had a particularly notable tournament, finishing at 2 under par, to pace the Gamecocks and finish 11th individually.  Allen Koon turned in another career best performance of 3 under par on the final day of the tourney.

George's performance netted him SEC golfer of the week honors.  Congratulations GB4!

As you can see in the pictures, there really was a bull at Bulls Bay!

And most recently, the Gamecocks went to the Augusta State Invitational where they again played quite well.

The team placed fourth, led again by Academy Alum George Bryan IV, who finished 2nd individually.  It wasn't just George though, as the team turned in a season best 861.  George started the tourney with a blistering 66 and parred in the rest of the way.  He only missed winning the tourney because of a back nine 30 (yep, thirty!) turned in by the winner on the last day!

George's excellent results again netted him SEC golfer of the week honors.  George is ranked among the top 100 college golfers in the nation - this week at number 89.  Congratulations to George and all the Gamecocks for a season best performance!  We're all proud of you.

USC Gamecock Men Kick Off Spring Season in Florida

The USC Gamecocks finished strongly after a rough start in their first tournament of the 2006/2007 Spring Season at the John Hayt Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club.  Though the Gamecocks finished 12th of 15 teams, they posted one of the best scores on the last day of the tourney.  Had they been so effective on all three days, they might well have won.  So the potential for good things to happen is definitely there.

GBGA Alum George Bryan IV turned in the 2nd best score on the team overall, recovering from a rough 2nd day.  George is a Freshman at USC.
The Gamecocks will continue to practice and improve, getting ready for their next outing in about a month.

The Gamecocks this year are a young team that is building for the future.  The team has no Seniors and only 3 Juniors.  Eight of the twelve players are from right here in South Carolina.

Students Brave Inclement Weather to Attend Class!

We would like to celebrate several GBGA students who came to their golf classes in extraordinarily inclement weather at Weed Hill on Tuesday.

Freshmen:
Wesley Sheffield
Ryan Morrison
Michael Morrison

Sophomores:
Dale Rabune

Seniors:
Connor Blackwelder
Michael Day
Luke Reeves

These students got in some great putting and chipping practice both between showers and inside.  We also were able to practice our full swings.  Luke Reeves even hit a bucket of balls before class!

Our freshmen learned how to make short putts on really fast greens. Outside, we played several rounds of a putting game called Sinks and and also practiced our full shots.

Dale Rabune got in some really good chipping practice with his main chipping  club - his wedge.  Then we introduced him to chipping with the 9 and 7 irons so he will be comfortable with them.  Dale finished up the with some full shots.

Our seniors chipped with every club in their bags except the driver and putter.  They had to sink a chip with each club before moving on to the next.  They did this from greenside and from about four paces off the green.  They finished up with the full swing.

Thank you all for your dedication.  It will pay dividends.

Congratulations girls!

Congratulations to Libby Crawford and Mary Chandler Bryan for making it to the 2006 AAA Girls High School State Tournament!!!  These two 7th graders at Chapin Middle played wonderfully in their first year of high school golf.

Mary Chandler fired a career round of 84 to finish 11th and Libby finished with a 96.  Those are both scores to be proud of for the two 7th graders.  Both girls made their All Region team and Mary Chandler missed being on the All State team by only one position.  Way to go girls!

This year the AAA Girls State was held at Charwood Country Club here in the Midlands.
